Furniture by Atlantico

Atlantico uses solid wood, dovetail joints, and dowels for eye candy, but they aren't afraid to use metal runners, screws, and brackets where they won't be noticed.

Even so, the prices for oak are ~$2000 for each item.
Nice enough that I want them. Expensive enough that I can't afford them.

Mechanical Insects by Christopher Conte

For the same reason that our cat looks at his stuffed toy cow and recognizes a face from just two black dots, I look at these and immediately see insects.

1962-1968 1970 Royal Enfield Interceptor

Spotted in the Inner Richmond. The bike sports Avon tyres and looks original and unrestored, except for the frame colour. I doubt that green was a factory colour?

There's an unusual gear indicator on the back end of the shift lever. It's showing Neutral.

Update 5/9/09:

I see your photo of the "green" Interceptor.

I have one as well, in correct colours. See attached.
Iit is a USA bike now here in OZ and I can not find anyone else that has one.

There was a short run in 1960 of an experimental bike, 211 made. I supposedly have number 139 of these.

What is this Boeing 747?

These pictures clearly show a Boeing 747. But the inner pylons hold two engines each, and the outer pylons appear to hold ... drop tanks! No answers to what it could be.

Here's what it should look like:

Flying Flophouse

On those very long flights to the antipodes, I wish I could stretch out on a flat bed. If only each chair could recline fully and then elevate bunkbed style: A row of three seats could convert to a triple bunk!

Off-Set Airline Economy Class Seating

If you take a look at the 3-abreast seating in a McLaren F1, you'll notice the space saving advantages of offset seating: There's more room for three passengers sitting abreast if the seats are staggered.

"A first for the economy cabin, a seat design offering you a truly relaxed sleeping position. It has a contoured shoulder area specifically profiled for sleeping. The shape was derived from numerous prototype and passenger trials to minimise the step-back of the seats. You do not feel like the seats are even staggered, allowing interaction between you and other passengers, while reinforcing a high level of privacy." -ThompsonSolutions

This arrangement allows either 15% greater passenger capacity or 2" wider seats. I wonder which configuration the airlines will use...

I'm Not Quite Dead

Decades ago, long before reality tellevision, there was "play" that consisted of a real family living their life on a theatre stage. Eating, reading, sleeping etc. The audience could come and go at anytime 24/7. Interesting, but I don't think it was a success.

Installations by Gregor Schneider
Now, if a venue can be found, German artist Gregor Schneider will use a dying person as a performance piece. Yes, a volunteer will die for Schneider's art.

Some people might think this is sick or exploitive. I have no problem with it. Dying is the final part of life. I'm not afraid of that.

Joe's got a New Car

"Religion is the opiate of the people." -Karl Marx

The license plate on this 2002 272 horsepower Mercedes ML430 is "SCV 1", Italian for Vatican City State. Over the last 78 years Daimler Benz has been the unofficial car of the Vatican.

I thought the original bulletproof Popemobile was a based on an early 2-door RangeRover. Perhaps it wasn't bulletproof, but it set the style for future Popemobiles.

Ceiling Fans

Last week I installed a 12 volt cable lighting system in our living room. It has a 200 Watt transformer, and we're only using 5 x 20W = 100W of that power. Once we've added three more lights there will be plenty of illumination in our living room.

So , I was looking for a simple pendant lamp to replace the chandelier that we no longer need. But then during last Friday's heatwave, the thought occurred to me that we should replace the chandelier with a ceiling fan!

Here's the type of ceiling fan I'm looking for:

These are all from the Modern Fan Company and range in price from $200 to $400.

iMac Overheats like a Car

My iMac developed a problem on Friday: Horizontal lines (perhaps remanents of closed windows) appeared on the screen, soon followed by the iMac freezing. The only solution was to force a restart by holding down the "on" button.

I was puzzled by the problem, but I thought there might be a correlation with the unseasonably (unreasonably) hot weather.

So I used smcFanControl to crank up the cooling fans, and iStat Pro widget to monitor the internal temperature of the iMac. I sped all three fans up to 5,000rpm and watched the internal temperature drop. Problems solved! But lots of fan noise. So I cut the fan speed down to 1,500rpm to quiet things down, and that's done the trick.

4-Point Safety Belts

2-Point: First we had shoulder belts: They were no good if the car rolled over or was hit from the side.

3-Point: Now we use shoulder and lap belts. They keep you in your seat, but don't stop your upper body from lashing about during an impact.

Next we will have 4-point safety belts. I saw this setup today on a BMW scooter, but the same system could be used in a car: By your left shoulder you pull down a conventional 3-point safety belt. Then, by your right shoulder, you pull down a shoulder belt and latch it near your left hip.

In "Fates Worse than Death", Kurt Vonnegut mentions that the origins of the Ferris wheel can be traced to the contraptions used by artillery observers in the Union army during the Civil War.

Cardboard Condo

Planned for construction at Hayes and Franklin Street.

This building might fit in commercial/residential SOMA, but Hayes Valley deserves a different architecture.

The earth coloured walls rising above the roof create an emptiness that cheapens the appearance and negates any strength in the design.

The Price of Petrol

The Chevron gas station at Fell and Masonic is a good indicator of the highest price for petrol in the US. These were the prices tonight for a gallon of petrol. All three grades hit $4 for the first time.

Dale Chihuly Industries - Saffron Tower

I came across this installation after sunset, and just before it was dark enough for the street lights to compete for attention. Like a moth to a flame, I had to see what it was.

This 30-foot yellow neon tower installation was constructed to accompany the exhibit of Chihuly works at the de Young Museum June 14th - September 28th.

Free iPhone Ringtones

Apple only allows you to create ringtones for the iPhone from music purchased from the iTunes Store. But iToner lets you get around that restriction and add any ACC or mp3 files to the list of ringtones on your iPhone. No Jailbreaking required.

(The sale of ringtones is highly profitable for the phone companies. I can not fathom why anyone would pay for ringtones.)
