The Northern California "Storms"

I'm surprised at what passes for a storm in California. Here in San Francisco it's been raining with a bit of wind. Hardly a storm. But hundreds of thousands of people had their electricity supply interrupted. Josh and Amy were without electricity for 30 hours! Here's the before and after photos of their backyard:




In Wellington this weather would be called a "cold front". It would just be a normal variation in the weather. So why does a bit of wind and rain cause so much damage here? It's because we plant so many none-native trees in our sandy soil. They grow well, but the soil can't support their mass. At the mere hint of wind, they topple over, taking power lines with them.
